The Oxford and District Amateur Radio Society is now over 100 years old and one of the earliest members was Howard Long, originally a short wave listener but sat the amateur radio and Morse code examinations and received the call sign G5LO in 1932. In 1939 all amateur radio licences were revoked at the outbreak of World War 2, however Howard was disabled and not called up. He was given a wireless receiver instead and asked to monitor and report on enemy Morse code traffic. He did this most effectively throughout the war and was awarded a BEM for his efforts. He died in 1977 aged 75.

His call sign is now used by the Society for special events.

G5LO/p will be on the air on Thursday 8 May 2025 from Trinity College Oxford as part of their VE day event. We will be using the HF bands and VHF 2m for local stations.
